Singer DF151_G Adjustable Dress Form, Gray, Medium Review

Singer DF151_G Adjustable Dress Form, Gray, MediumI decided to order this dressform, so that I would no longer have to struggle with measurements and guesswork.Right now, I do not use patterns, and I envisioned draping fabric on the dress form, pinning and sizing everything up, like magic.
Well, I am still trying to figure all of this out. This dress form is handy, though I am not as pleased with it as I hoped I would be.It is very easy to put together, though I would be happier if it was heavier, sturdier-not so easy to tip or rock.I like that it spins on the stand.I thought the dials would be easier to use-they seem to want to pop back, spring-action, when the dials are turned up/out too high.Alas, I do not find that this model "models" my proportions exactly-you cannot expand butt, without also expanding the hips.I think the upper portion of the dressform will be more useful for fitting.Guess I will have to work with it, it has some limitations, but it also has some advantages that I have yet to explore.

The height also adjusts, and a hem gauge comes included to mark the hemline for skirts and dresses. In addition, the unit's fabric cover makes it possible to pin items onto the form. Its size range measures 39 to 45 inches at the bust, 30 to 36-1/2 inches at the waist, and 40 to 46 inches at the hip. The form requires basic assembly, but no tools are required. Sewing Essentials, 18 Pcs Household Repair Needles Set Review

Sewing Essentials, 18 Pcs Household Repair Needles SetThere were supposed to be 10 self-threading needles in the sewing essentials, but the poor packaging (poorly taped closed) allowed for only 5 to be found in shipment, 2 of which had escaped from the packaging all together and were loose in the box. Very dissatisfied with the packaging of this product, and unhappy that half of the needles are missing altogether.

Euro-Pro EP150 Tiny Sewing Machine Review

Euro-Pro EP150 Tiny Sewing MachineMy credentials: I began machine sewing in 1966, and for over twenty years was a professional seamstress specializing in costumes for dancers, theatres, and re-enactors. During that time, my own machine was an all-metal Kenmore that went forward, backward, and did a simple zigzag. So I am not one of those people who cannot live without their thirty fancy stitches and automatic buttonholes. I prefer simple machines because they never break down. Literally, my metal monster never once had to go to the shop. Even when I had access to machines with lots of features, I never found anything they were good for. I bought this to have a lightweight machine, easier to set up and put away.
I found it fairly worthless.
It has no foot pedal. The start/stop sewing switch has to be moved with your right hand, so that when you start or stop, you only have one hand on the fabric. This may be passable for stiff fabrics like denim, but can create havoc with blouse-weight (like quilt squares) or slithery materials (like satin or taffeta). There is also no speed adjustment, so you cannot go slower when doing something complicated, or speed up when you're just zooming a long straight seam, as for curtains. Even a non-electric treadle-powered machine gives you foot control so both hands can be on the fabric and variable speed!
There is a light, but it only shines brightly when the machine is still. As soon as you start sewing, it dims to nearly nothing.
Tension adjustment, which is half of making a proper stitch, is controlled by a primitive screw with no sort of marked dial. It only shows direction to tighten or loosen. It literally moves in and out from the machine body, so that when loose it can catch a thread during threading. You cannot, say, remember that you should have it on 5 for corduroy and 3 for satin: every time you switch fabrics, you get to sew samples on scraps until you accidentally get it just right again. The bobbin tension (no adjustment mentioned) is set so tight that on ordinary broadcloth I never could get the stitching balanced: with top thread tension all the way up, the thread still pulled too much to the back.
There is no way to adjust presser foot tension, so you can't lighten it up for quadruple layers of corduroy and you can't tighten it for thin fabrics.
The needle is extremely difficult to thread, even though I have steady hands and excellent close-up vision. The thread guide right above the needle is so tiny and so closed that slipping the thread into it took several tries. The guard rails around the presser foot make access difficult even when the needle is all the way up. On top of this, the shank behind the needle is set so close that getting hold of the thread on the back side of the needle's eye to pull it through is much too challenging. Though my hands are small, I had to use tweezers!
At no time do the instructions mention that different weight fabrics need lighter or heavier needles: too light a needle breaks; too heavy a needle pulls the fabric and often causes snarly stitches.
For [money], you can buy an entry level Brothers sewing machine that has all the features you need (but weighs a lot: I got one a couple of years ago), or for [money]one of the minis that at least has a foot pedal . For what it does, this should only be selling for [money], like comparable machines....

Home Sewing Thread 50 Spool/50 Assorted Colors Review

Home Sewing Thread 50 Spool/50 Assorted ColorsI was hoping for more. The spools hold very little. Also, they're not machine friendly. This is meant for hand sewn projects. It does offer a good variety of colors. I thought this might be the case and (because of the low cost) bought 2 when I made my original purchase. I sorted the different colors out and 2 of these spools might last me a bit, but still..... I gave it 3 stars because of the variety, and there is that.

I hate to sound so negative but I doubt I would prompt others to buy. For "art projects" it might be OK. But know what you're getting. Also, as I said above, a sewing machine can't use the small spools.

Brother PE700II Embroidery Machine with USB Port Review

Brother PE700II Embroidery Machine with USB PortBrother PE-700II Embroidery Machine / B0013J8F9U

In this video review of the Brother Embroidery Machine PE-700II, I want to show you just a few of the basic things you can do with this machine, right out of the box. This is my first embroidery machine, though I've been sewing for a few years now on a Brother XL2600I, and the fact that I'm able to showcase the basics of this machine when I only received it in the mail yesterday is a testament to how easy this machine is to use. In this video review, I'm going to briefly show how to load a bobbin, how to load the material, how to transfer a pattern from a computer to the embroidery machine, and how to load and change the color spool. I'll also show some projects I finished yesterday, and talk about some potential pitfalls to avoid. (I'd like to show more, but the video time limit is fairly short!)

The Brother PE-700II is a single-use embroidery machine, NOT a dual-use embroidery/sewing machine. The reason I bought a single-use embroidery machine is because it makes sense to me to invest in a separate machine just for sewing, and that way your expensive embroidery machine sustains less wear and tear and lives longer. I've posted a picture of the PE-700II and all the included paperwork and accessories out of the box. The paperwork includes a detailed manual in English, the same manual in Spanish, a "pictures-only" manual for quick reference, and a manual for the USB functionality of the machine. The manuals are very detailed and extremely helpful - if you'd like to see them for yourself, I think they are currently available on the Brother website. The standard accessories are included - white thread, empty bobbins, seam ripper, scissors, maintenance parts, a 5x7 inch embroidery hoop and guide, and a nifty plastic machine cover.

For the video, I've selected a quick and simple two-color pattern that I downloaded for free online so that I could show off the USB functionality of this machine. The machine itself comes with quite a few pre-programmed patterns, including the English alphabet in 6 different fonts, but if you're anything like me, you're far more interested in the ability to download millions of free patterns online. Indeed, the selling point for the PE-700II for me was the standardized USB connectivity. I was wary of machines that require special card readers and special programs in order to work - I don't like buying peripherals (what if they break? what if I can't buy a replacement?) and I hate learning new software. The PE-700II, on the other hand, has a standard USB interface which means that you treat the machine as a removable device, as though it were a really big USB thumb drive. The drag-and-drop ability means that I don't have to learn a new software in order to use my machine and, best of all, the USB connectivity is operating system independent - meaning that the PE-700II talks equally well to my Windows XP desktop and my Windows Vista laptop. You can save the patterns from the computer to the machine's internal memory, or you can just hook up a laptop next to the machine, use the pattern, and then delete it from the machine memory right then and there. I cannot rave enough about this feature - I've already downloaded and tested dozens of online free patterns and everything has worked perfectly. The one thing to be aware of, as I note in the video, is that the machine isn't terribly good at sensing which colors are meant to be loaded. You just have to ignore the color prompting and watch the pattern about to be embroidered and feed in that color directly - or follow the numbered instructions that come with the online patterns. You can reprogram the pattern, once it's stored in machine memory, to have the correct colors, but I never felt it was worth the trouble. (UPDATE: I've since loaded these free patterns into a separate program in order to print 'actual sized' templates of the patterns, and the same "wrong" colors are loaded into the program, leading me to believe that this isn't a flaw in this embroidery machine, but rather in the source program. Interestingly, the "non-free" patterns tend to have correct color charts, so I suspect that the free ones just weren't polished fully before release. Again, just pay attention to the pattern on the LCD screen and you should be just fine.) A quick mention of formats - this machine accepts .pes and .dst formats, which I've already found an abundance of. (UPDATE: And there are several free conversion programs out there that I've found that will convert patterns to .pes and .dst format.)

Loading the Bobbin: If you've used a Brother machine before, this is easy as pie, but even if not, it's a quick learning curve. For embroidery, I just use the white thread on the bobbin for everything. I didn't have video time to show how to wind the bobbin, but it's pretty easy to follow the user manual for this, and there's also cheap bobbin winding machines like this one SideWinder Portable Bobbin Winder if you want to be really spoiled rotten. Be certain to wind the bobbin carefully - as in sewing, a tangled bobbin will cause your pattern to muck up and will bring the bobbin color on top of the pattern by accident.

Loading the Material: The machine comes with a 5x7 hoop, but it also accommodates the other Brother embroidery hoop sizes. Ideally, you want to use the smallest hoop that will work with your pattern, so as to avoid wasting material and stabilizer, but in the video I use the included hoop. The machine doesn't come with any stabilizer, so be sure to have some on hand so that you can get started as soon as your package arrives. You can buy stabilizer anywhere you buy fabric, and it's usually about half as expensive as the cheaper fabrics. The stabilizer does what it sounds - it provides stability for the fabric whilst your machine is rapidly punching hundreds of holes into it. In the video, I'm using a medium weight stabilizer.

Loading the Hoop: I can't rave enough about how easy it is to use the embroidery hoop. I've been cross stitching for years, and opening and loading the hoop feels like second nature. Just unscrew until loose, drop the fabric into place, pop the inner hoop in, tug the fabric taut, and screw to tighten. The 'snap in place' feature for inserting the hoop into place on the machine guide deserves a quick mention - although the hoop DOES snap-in-place, the snap action is subtle, so don't go crazy trying to force a loud crack from the machine because you won't get one. Basically, the "snap" is a half-feeling, half-sound that you half-sense. And while that may sound confusing and intimidating, I can assure you that I was completely comfortable with the process after my first three or four loads.

Loading the Spool: Loading the spool is so incredibly easy with the automatic threading feature. If you've ever loaded a sewing machine before, you will have no trouble with this; if you haven't, I'm guessing you'll have it down perfectly in less than five minutes. I'm going to miss the auto-threading when I go back to regular sewing on my other Brother machine.

Pausing the Pattern: Once the pattern starts, you can pause the process at any time for any reason. Need to trim the thread tail because it's sticking up out of the pattern instead of sticking out the back? Press the Start/Stop button to pause the program and trim away. Need to check the bobbin because you think it's getting low? Pause the program, lift the foot lever, cut the current thread, pull out the hoop, and check the bobbin level. You can replace the bobbin, if necessary, then pop the hoop back into place, lower the foot, and continue and the machine won't miss a single beat.

I cannot rave enough about this machine. It's easy to learn, easy to use, it practically does everything except wipe my nose for me, it has cheerfully used every downloaded pattern and every type of thread I've fed into it, and the LCD screen is actually surprisingly easy to navigate, considering the natural limitations of a computer stuffed into an embroidery machine. The ONLY issues I have had with it so far was one time when the white bobbin thread leaked through the pattern onto the top (I had wound the bobbin too sloppily and the bobbin thread was tangled) and another time when I ran out of bobbin thread and wasn't paying attention in time to switch out the bobbin and the resulting pattern was incomplete - and you'll notice that both of those "problems" were human error on my part. I hope my video and pictures will be useful to others and I had a very fun time putting them together.

UPDATE (08/23/09): Still as happy as can be with my embroidery machine. I've gone back through the user manual more thoroughly this time and found that not only can it automatically stop when the bobbin or spool is running low, it's also very easy to go to a specific portion of a pattern - you can even move the pattern stich-by-stitch until you get to *exactly* where you want to start, or re-start as the case may be.

Another neat thing I've learned is that the little boxes in the upper left hand corner of the machine represent the three Brother hoop sizes most commonly used with this machine - and when a box is "grayed out", that indicates the pattern is too big for that hoop size. Very neat! I definitely recommend picking up the other, smaller hoop size (Brother SA443 Medium Embroidery Hoop 100mm x 100mm) for embroidery monograms and names on clothing and sheets - the smaller hoop is much more manageable, in my opinion.

Euro-Pro 9105 New Computer Sewing Machine Review

Euro-Pro 9105 New Computer Sewing MachineMachine is smaller and more lightweight than other machines I have owned. It does have a nice assortment of built-in stitches and 3 built-in buttonholes. Over all the machine appearance is nice and is easy to operate, also the instruction booklet is easy to follow. It does have features normally found on higher-end sewing machines; but it does lack the quality. The head and floor (power) pedal is constructed of thin plastic and feels weak like it could easily break. Although manufacturer claims the machine can sew through 7 layers of denim, I doubt it would last long due to lack of power. The stitch precision is also lacking, and it does not have the stitch calibration of higher-end sewing machines. The stitch quality is more in keeping with a toy sewing machine or "mini" sewing machine that are now available.I spent several hours testing the machine and comparing the stitch quality with another machines I own, and my decision was to return the machine for a refund. Overall quality is lacking and I was also concerned with the availability of parts and service. Anyone wanting a computerized machine and keep within the price range of this machine, I would suggest purchasing a good used Swiss or German made machine, the craftsmanship and technology far exceeds the Euro-Pro Brand. For a beginning sewer, I would suggest starting out with a basic machine and later getting a more advanced model.

Sewing Machine Adjustable Binder Foot Review

Sewing Machine Adjustable Binder FootHandy accessory to have for binding anything. The instructions are minimal though. I had to research the internet to find out exactly how to use this particular binder. The adjustable screw is very hard to use as it's very tight and close to the plate of the machine once it's attached. I practiced a lot before using it on the final item I was sewing. Over all, I like it and am glad to have it.

Singer 14SH654 FreeArm Overlock Sewing Machine Serger Review

Singer 14SH654 FreeArm Overlock Sewing Machine SergerI purchased this serger from Walmart about a week ago. The low price is what lured me in, and I have not been terribly disappointed yet, considering what I paid for it. Sergers are fairly complex and take a lot more patience to operate than sewing machines. You can expect to put at least an hour or two into setting this machine up, and should plan on running a few scraps of fabric through it initially to adjust the tension dials, which can be a bit finicky and over-sensitive. The machine comes with a DVD that is INFINITELY more helpful than the manual, and with a lot of patience and several failed attempts, I was able to thread it correctly and produce a stitch. My only complaint is that the stitching can be inconsistent at times, no matter how much I fiddle with the tension dials, but I cannot say I expected a flawless machine at such a low price. This is a nice machine for those on a budget or who use their sergers lightly. I only use mine for finishing the edges of light-weight fabrics, and it suits my purposes quite well. A more expensive machine would probably function more consistently, true, but I'm thankful there's a serger out there that meets my more stringent budget!

Brother PE770 Embroidery Machine with USB Memory-Stick Compatibility Review

Brother PE770 Embroidery Machine with USB Memory-Stick CompatibilityI didn't want to spend too much on an embroidery machine before knowing if it would be something that would get a lot of use.Although I don't have a dedicated sewing room I opted against getting a combo embroidery/sewing machine because I already had a regular machine.I spent almost a year researching machines and the major selling point besides price was that it takes a thumb drive. It was really easy to get started without having to study the manual too extensively.I hate anything with a steep learning curve because I have very little time to sew.I don't want to spend my precious time reading the manual.I had been looking at Babylocks, but regardless of what the Babylock sales person said, the Brother machines appear identical and much less expensive.I don't have time to take classes (an advantage of buying from a dealer) so I went for the cheaper Brother. Also, Babylock doesn't sell this model as a stand alone embroidery machine. The PE770 is the same as the BL Ellure Plus without the sewing machine. The set up is really easy and I immediately began stitching out some of the preloaded designs. The stitch quality is great. The preloaded designs are dominated by the "cutsie" stuff that isn't really my cup of tea.Who wants a garment with a teddy bear playing accordion on a tree stump?I downloaded some cool designs from a website and put them on the thumb drive. It was very easy to transfer them to the machine and sew them even though we don't own a PC.My husband found a program for Macs so I was able to see the image and the color chart on the Mac. We can run PC programs on one of our Macs and I will probably get Embird soon.Given the fact that it is a lower-end model there are some downsides. The image is in black & white on the machine's display. Also, the image just looks like a blob. There is very little editing on the machine itself.I am interested to know if the embroidery software will make that less of a problem.I haven't ventured into trying to place designs in an exact spot yet.The embroidery hoop comes with a grid to help with that but I haven't figured out how to do it.Once the thread broke and it was really easy to figure out how to get back to where it was and restitch it.If I end up using it a lot I might eventually consider a fancier machine but I think I made a good choice for a beginner. The automatic threader is great! The seller (Ken's via Amazon) sent some information about different types of stabilizer that was very helpful.I just wish I had more time to play with this fun machine.

Singer Touch & Sew 7462 Electronic Sewing Machine Review

Singer Touch & Sew 7462 Electronic Sewing MachineAfter reading a lot of on line reviews, I got this machine in September 2007.Funny that at the time I could hardly find many negative reviews and the ones I did find were people who had a beef with Singer or a weird fluke that made their machine break. So I took the plunge. I'd had another Singer that lasted a good 10 years with sporadic use.I'm certainly no seamstress. This was more or less for easy projects and simple sewing. It was easy to get started on the machine. The buttons for the various stitches are great. The horizontal placement of the thread seemed like a great idea. The instruction book was clear. It is easy to perform maintenance on the machine as the screws are easily accessible. That's about where my joy ends and my complaints begin.

First, the lighting stinks.Second, it's LOUD.If you get to pumping away at a long line of stitching, it's like a jackhammer. Then there's the godforsaken foot pedal.Irritating? You bet!It seems to either go slow or super fast and is clunky and unnatural.I have to use a bare foot to be able to grasp it with my toes to massage it to go a decent speed without jerking into super speed.Trying to get it to maintain a comfortable speed is hard work.If you step on the pedal and remove your foot, and then try to step on it again again right away, the pedal fails to work at all if you haven't allowed the needle unit to stop.It can be super annoying.

The last complaint I will voice is the fact that I am having one heck of a time getting thread that agrees with the machine.Yes, I've cleaned the machine.Yes, I've oiled the machine.Yes, I've adjusted the tension up or down. Yes, I've changed needles...bought good thread...am using "Singer" products...sacrificed a goat and did a rain dance...but the thread is forever clumping around the top of the needle and snapping off.No matter what I do thus far, I can't seem to solve that problem.

All in all, I am frustrated with this machine.I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. You know that saying "you get what you pay for"?Well, if only that were true in this case!I haven't even gotten what I paid for!

Distinctive 7-8", 5-8", 3-8", 1-4" Wide Rolled Hem Hemmer Foot & Binder Foot & EdgeStitcher Sewing Foot Package - Fits All Low Shank Singer, Brother, Babylock, Viking (Husky Series), Euro-Pro, Janome, Kenmore, White, Juki, Simplicity and More! Review

Distinctive 7-8', 5-8', 3-8', 1-4' Wide Rolled Hem Hemmer Foot & Binder Foot & EdgeStitcher Sewing Foot Package - Fits All Low Shank Singer, Brother, Babylock, Viking, Euro-Pro, Janome, Kenmore, White, Juki, Simplicity and MoreI have used all these attachments for several weeks now; since I am new to sewing I took my time in learning how to use them.First of all they are metal, and sturdy and very well made. I have a Brother LS2521i and they fit perfectly. The rolled hem attachments are awesome, a must have.Your hems come out perfect. The Binder foot was a little tricky to use, but that was my lack of experience since I tried to use a jersey fabric that was too thick and the width of the strip of fabric I was using for bias tape was too wide. After measuring correctly and watching some videos I found in YouTube on using that same attachment it finally worked (after quite a few tries).

The EdgeSticher foot was also a little tricky to use, but again reading the directions several times and finally finding a YouTube video did the trick. Also a very useful foot to have!

I have a book called The Sewing Machine Attachment Handbook by Charlene Phillips that helped me immensely to choose the sewing foot atachments I needed.

Bottom line, they are very nice and do their job.As far as the Binder foot, I might just buy or make bias tape and use the other Distinctive Tape-Sticher presser foot to attach it.

The only thing I wish it had was a nice case like the other Distinctive foot sets.

Household Essentials 1398 16-by-32-Inch Sewing Center Review

Household Essentials 1398 16-by-32 inch Sewing CenterI ordered this not really expecting much for such a low price. Was I ever mistaken!!

This makes any table top a sewing center. It is well padded with very clear markings. Keeps my machine from sliding while sewing and reduces noise. The pockets are convenient for placing items in while working on a project.

It folds and fits in my sewing machine carrying case for easy storage and to take along to sewing/craft classes.

I was using a foldable compact ironing board to protect my table tops and corian counter tops. I can now rid my self of this space taking setup.

This setup makes for an compact, lightweight setup that transports and stores easily.

Not only a terrific solution for the fulltime RV seamstress and crafter, but also would work well in dorm rooms and small apartments.

Product Description:
Jam-packed with an assortment of organizational options, this 16-by-32-inch sewing center makes a wonderful addition to any crafting room or creative workspace. The unit's padded muslin construction and non-slip silicone backing serve to dampen machine noise and prevent sewing machines from "walking" across the counter or table during operation, while its handy grid--printed at 1-inch increments--enables effortless measurements while cutting or hemming. Even more, its roomy surface area offers plenty of space for both a sewing machine and an iron, making it easy to pre-press seams, iron collars, affix sizing, and mount iron-on patches without making multiple trips across the room to use a freestanding ironing board. Additional highlights include three detachable pockets for bobbins, thread, elastic banding, and other small notions; two scissor holders for keeping pinking shears or fabric scissors nearby; and a small waste bag--all of which hang neatly over the edge of a table or desk for out-of-the-way convenience. An indispensible tool for both novice and professional tailors, the sewing center measures approximately 16 by 32 by 1/2 inches.

Euro-Pro Stitch Art 18-Stitch Sewing Machine - 8260 Review

Euro-Pro Stitch Art 18-Stitch Sewing Machine - 8260I am incredibly frustrated by this machine. It ran well at first - seems well-made, sturdy, and easy to use.An hour into my sewing machine explorations (I am a total novice), and I can't get the darn thing to sew. It's tricky pulling up the lower thread. When I do pull it up, the machine jams immediately with the first stitch, resulting in that dreaded "bird's nest."The bobbin case keeps popping out.I was initially able to resolve this by adjusting the bobbin tension. But after another 20 minutes of sewing, this has started all over again, and no amount of tension adjustment makes any improvement.30 minutes of Googling leads me to speculate that I've either damaged the needle or messed up the hook timing. Not sure how to adjust the hook timing, since it's not described in the manual. How about replacement needles? Can't figure out where to get those either.

This is an ongoing problem with Euro-pro products, and the reason that I will probably never buy another Euro-pro machine again. It's extremely difficult, if not impossible, to find replacement parts. And the manual is so simplistic that it's just a joke.Useless.I know that a lot of my problems are just because I've never used a sewing machine before, but the cryptic instruction manual and the absolute dearth of information available on the internet for this machine make it a total bust for me.One more try tonight before it gets sent back.

**Updated - ** I returned this and got a Singer that was cheaper, but with fewer functions. It works beautifully, and I love the reassurance that having a common brand brings.

Side Cutter II Sewing Machine Foot Attachment Review

Side Cutter II Sewing Machine Foot AttachmentThis is a wonderful product for LIGHTWEIGHT sewing! I happen to use it on very sheer nylon for grooming smocks, so it converts my straight shanked Brother and Singer machines into sergers very easily. I know Singer has a heavier duty side cutter and plan to purchase it for future heavy weight sewing, but for now, this is the product that I will be using. You will need to read the instructions in order to get it to work the first time as I just expected it to go to work automatically. NOT! It's wonderful for the price for lightweight materials and I would recommend it for the hobby to advanced sewer who does not want to purchase a serger right away.
