Singer Sewing Machine/Embroidery Machine Futura CE350 Review

I recently purchased this machine (not on amazon.) It is such a LEMON! Constant error messages during regular sewing and embroidery. I spent hours on the phone with service people trying to resolve the problem. I attempted to embroider 5 times. Every time the thread got jammed and knotted. Ripped my fabric twice. It never made it all the way through a design. It might be tempting to buy this machine for the price compared to others, but there must be a reason for the low price right? It doesn't even deserve one star. If i could give it a -5 i would!

Singer 9940 Quantum Sewing Machine Review

Having grown up with the wonderful Singer Manual machines as in non-digitalized I thought I'd treat myself to the digital world and update all of my machines at once. Lucky for me I didn't get rid or trade in any of those good old ones.
This machine for todays world is well made but when it lacks some common sense and simple item designs such as lighting up the sewing area and a reverse switch or button that does not need to be held down during the sewing process.....it just spoils all the rest!
This machine does not light your sewing path and stitching area well. I have to get out a desk or floor lamp to do this. At first I thought I must be crazy and kept trying to figure out how to focus the light onto the needle and footplate but couldn't do it because it's fixed. Horrible design for the top notch price they command for it.
Then there is the matter of sewing in reverse or backup stitching. I would press the button and it still only went forward....right. You actually have to take your hand off the sewing material and hold down the button constantly to get it to reverse. This I have yet to do well. The manual machines spoiled me...you set it to go in reverse and then it goes in reverse. Here you would think the manufactures who've been making Singers for the home and professional sewer would keep a clarity of designs in mind always. And develop a button you push for setting the reverse function. Then push again to set it back to forward setting without having to hold it down the whole time. You need your hands to hold the item while it sews. Or to guide it around pins etc. Get a life Singer.....you are letting your reputation slip away.
I would not buy this machine again.
I would not recommend this machine at the price even as low as 500 I paid for brand new non-opened one. Have to shop around but it can be had for 500 18 months ago. And yes I would sell mine. It's virtually unused and in mint condition. Bottom line look at Janome or Viking or Bernina machines and check out how they sew at a sewing center before investing good money for a machine that doesn't fit your style or comfort zone.
And to think I could have bought 2 old featherweights for the same money. Then I'd have four and be so much happier! (Not the modern featherweights the pre-60 machines:)))) When Singer paid close attention to details and gave the sewer what they needed not bells and whistles that turn into lint and dust as the unused machine sits gathering it. (I own 7 Singers including XL6000 & serger plus 4 other including an industrial. And I'm computer funtional.)

Hemline Two-Bag Trolley Set Review

I have a small house, and I do not have my own sewing room (bummer); so, storage is a major hassle for me. I do not like hard vinyl sewing machine cases (they are just ugly and not all machines fit in all cases - I know, I got stuck with a few).I have to keep my machine and sewing supplies in my living room; so, I was THRILLED when I found a beautiful sewing machine case - with an extra bag (which holds everything - or it can even be used to carry my laptop if I am traveling, or act as a piece of luggage). This second piece holds any extra supplies, tools, or "works in progress".I LOVE THIS SET!

Reasons to buy this Trolley Set are numerous, but for me, here are my top two:

1. It's very attractive, and I bought the burgundy set since it blended in with my furniture (ok, not a great reason for seasoned seamstresses, but for me it was!);

2. This set is HUGE! I can safely store my old Baby-Lock 1550 in there, plus my coordinating canvas thread case, which can also found at JoAnn Fabrics. This extra thread case (purchased separately for about $15) holds about 20 spools of thread, plus: my bobbin collection, scissors, etc. AND it as several "see-thru" pockets to store other things, too.

The Trolley Set is FULL of hidden pockets (and it's extremely well-cushioned with added support panels to keep my machine safe) to store all kinds of stuff and STILL has room for my cutting mats (behind my sewing machine, where I also keep my thread case).

I purchased this machine as a replacement to the ancient sewing machine in our attic that was my great grandmother's.It boasts of being able to sew through three layers of denim, but I haven't tried that yet.I did make a pair of pajama pants out of a tricky thin, slightly stretchy satin, and it worked impeccably.The auto-tension adjustment is a piece of cake and the different stitches work very well.As a beginning sewer, this machine meets all my needs.The slipcover that came with it is very nice as well - no huge case needed to keep it free of dust.

Brother BC1000 Computerized Sewing Machine Review

just picked up this baby at my local super-t. I would say i am beginner/intermediate. I was intending to buy the singer that was on sale, but it got several bad reviews, and im not down with that. I have always wanted a decent machine, but this is my first real one, ive been the one buying the crappy battery operated version. Well, i have to say ive been playing around with it all afternoon and im really pleased, lightweight, yet feels sturdy, doesnt shake, vibrate on the table, sews smoothly. Ive been having fun with the many decorative stitches already.

I have to say dont shy away from this machine if you are a beginner. the instructions were easy to follow to thread it, and the fast threading bobbin is a great help. Its got a automatic needle threader-so fabulous! I thought i would never be able to use all the functions, but here i am, a few hours intomy first day with it, and i "get it". I honestly expected it to be much more complicated. Its really not. The instruction book seems thourough, yet not overly so. has guidelines for different stitches and why you would use them-a bonus for me, as i had no idea there was a need for so many different ones..included are several different "feet" a button-putter-on-er, quilting, a seam ripper, a few tools.

I gave four stars because the foot pedal is a little too lightweight. It seems to work smoothly, easy to control, but for almost 200$ it couldve been a bit more professional.

I tested this machine for a small needlework shop to see if it were worth keeping around for emergencies and odd jobs.
Although the description claims that this little machine takes the "intimidation" out of sewing, it's really a fussy little gadget that best serves experienced stitchers in emergency situations or while travelling.To expect that a neophyte would be able to know how to adjust tension and manipulate fabric is to invite verbal abuse from those who don't know what they're doing.
One of the main flaws of this machine is not necessarily its mechanics (it's far noisier than a regular machine), but its accessories; it's shipped with a pack of bobbins and spools pre-wound with the worst thread imaginable: cheap, fuzzy, short-fiber spun polyester.Not only will spun polyester thread cause expensive machines to choke, but in this machine, it's a recipe for the disasters of tangling thread, throat plate jams and damaged needles.
The needles it's shipped with -- inferior metal, semi-ball point -- will only handle plain-woven midweight cotton fabric.If you attempt to stitch on stretch or knit fabric, be prepared for skipped stitches and jamming, unless you purchase ballpoint needles and long staple polyester thread.Woven fabrics are best stitched with sharp-point or universal point needles.
I was disappointed that I couldn't find a way to adjust stitch length, even though I've operated dozens of domestic, commercial, and industrial sewing machines.The "speed control" buttons are practically useless, and do not control the feed dogs.There is no reverse stitch control to form backstitching at the beginning and end of a seam.
I found the size of the power pedal small enough to hold between the knees (to keep it from "creeping").
When the proper thread and needles are used for the project (and again, a complete beginner would have no idea about using undamaged points or when to choose long staple poly or cotton) this machine stitches well enough for quick seams and hems.
If you're looking for a "first" sewing machine, buy one in the $80 - $140 range from a shop where the staff are willing to help you learn to sew.The Euro-Pro Dressmaker 998B is NOT for raw beginners without an experienced sewing buddy, but for experienced or casual stitchers who use the proper thread & needles for small projects or emergency repairs.

Singer 57817 17 Stitch Function and Electronic Speed Control Sewing Machine Review

I have had this machine for years! I paid a lot more for it than Amazon is offering. So the price is just not an issue here. The main advantage of this machine is 1) It is Singer (the name says it all); 2) It has an automatic thread tension control (an invaluable feature for novices!); 3) It has 17 stitches (even the one for sewing on buttons, embroidery, and monogram); 4) It is very easy to operate, as a very detailed and easy to comprehend user manual is included; and 5) It is light-weight, compared to those bulky Kenmore and Bernina machines, it is is just a baby!
I would definitely recommend this machine to novices (especially for such a price) it is easy and cute, too.

Singer 1507 8-Stitch Sewing Machine with 4-Step Buttonhole Review

I have been satisfied with singer sewing machines in the past so was happy when my daughter purchased this machine for me as a gift.
This is the third time I have used it. The first two times I had no problems sewing bathroom curtains and patching a couple pairs of pants. This time however, while doing a straight stitch for a hem the needle kept jamming in the bobbin area breaking three needles. I noticed that there was a clinking sound when the needle would go down below the machine surface. Upon further inspection I noticed the needle was hitting on the toothlike part in the bobbin area. I have changed needles, tried to readjust the foot and even tested various fabrics to see if there would be a difference, but to no avail. I spent a good two hours trying to trouble shoot this problem (spent more time troubleshooting then actual sewing). I have given up for now.
If anyone has a solution, I'd love to hear about it.

Brother SA443 4-Inch-by-4-Inch Medium Hoop Review

I purchased this for use with my Brother PE700II Embroidery Machine with USB Port - the machine comes with a large 5x7 hoop, but I found that was too big for most of my projects. Smaller pieces of cloth and clothing won't fit in the 5x7 size and while you can use the bigger hoop with small pieces (with the help of adhesive stabilizer), it seemed worthwile to invest in a smaller hoop. This hoop works perfectly with the PE700II - except for the size, it is identical to the hoop that came included with the machine. Simply unscrew the clasp to loosen the hoop, set your fabric and stabilizer face-up on top of the hoop, drop the inner hoop into place, and screw to tighten.

The 4x4 is the perfect size for most patterns and most projects. The smaller size also allows for you to save on stabilizer. Embroidering clothing items, especially for children or pets, is *much* easier with this smaller hoop. Even your average bathroom washcloth is going to be smaller than 5x7 inches, so unless you're *only* planning to embroidery large items like shirts and sheets, I definitely recommend investing in a set of smaller hoops.

Two items to note: First, this 4x4 is the medium hoop attachment for the PE700II machine and is represented as such on the LCD display when viewing patterns. When the medium hoop on the LCD display is grayed out, that indicates that the pattern is too large to use with this hoop (see the product image I've posted). If you can afford only one of the smaller hoops, I would probably recommend buying this medium 4x4 hoop over the smallest 1x2 hoop (Brother SA442 Small Embroidery Hoop (1in x 2in)) over the 1x2 hoop, just because many patterns will fall just slightly out of the 1x2 measurements and you'll need to use the medium hoop size instead. However, if you can afford both, you'll definitely get a great deal of use out of them.

Which brings me to my second note: The prices for these hoop attachments seem to vary widely and that I was able to procure it for *much* cheaper than shown here as part of a hoop set that included one of each of the four major hoop sizes for my machine. So I would recommend researching around to find the best deal, price-wise. Having said that, even at full price this hoop will likely pay for itself in no time, considering the savings in stabilizers, adhesives, and material.

I purchased this for use with my Brother PE700II Embroidery Machine with USB Port - the machine comes with a large 5x7 hoop, but I found that was too big for most of my projects. Singer Felting and Embellishing Machine Review

Needles are too fragile and very expensive to replace.Not only that, time consuming to replace.Works fine on thin items, but needles break when embellishing trims, ribbons, etc.I have used about 6 times and replaced 18 needles trying to attach embellishments.Needles should be made in light, medium and heavy weights. I am an experienced sewer, and I know I am not abusing machine.

Reliable 2000U-33 Barracuda Portable Zig-Zag Walking-Foot Sewing Machine Review

I'm no an expert at sewing but have had some good experiences with an older rock-solid Singer zigzag.This machine is the basic do-it-yourself entry-level zig-zag walking foot capable of handling heavier fabrics and sails.It is nearly identical to those sold under many different names.God luck deciphering which ones are made in China or Taiwan, the latter supposedly a bit better made.A fine-tuned version (at a significantly higher price) is available from Sailrite (beware some of the sleight-of-hand discounters selling that brand though Sailrite themselves are highly reputable).

I received mine a week ago and have just done a couple of practice projects with 1" webbing and 6-8 oz. duck.I'm finding that the machine gets hung up often.I initially thought it was from using the wrong sized needle or simply too much fabric.Through experimentation culminating with turning by hand with no fabric or thread, I've found that the clutch mechanism in this thing can barely overcome the mechanical resistance of the spring-loaded walking presser foot, even when not actually sewing.I followed the manual instructions and rotated the clutch washer 180º and I guess it's another one of those help suggestions designed simply to waste your time.

I've ordered the Sailrite Monster II balance wheel and, based on my initial experiences, think a modification like that is an absolute necessity.It's not a refinement or luxury but a requirement for this machine to be functional as the factory clutch is pure rubbish.Right now, I have it cranked down so tight I can't unscrew it, but it still slips constantly.

My only other complaint is minor.The foot controller is pretty flimsy but that's not a surprise.It's asinine though that the cord from the machine to the foot controller is so short it barely reaches the floor from a kindergarten-sized table.The A/C plug end is plenty long.That's just very sloppy quality control and I'm going to have to splice a longer wire, simple really, but not something most people would want to deal with.

Bottom line, if you plan to add an enhanced balance wheel with positive mechanical engagement, everything else seems reasonably functional and solid.If you think you can use this as shipped, in my opinion, not a good choice.

Shark 60-Stitch Sewing Machine - 384 Review

I have been teaching sewing and quilting for years and this little machine very favorably impressed me! I will recommend it to students who need something basic...for hems and patching, as well as when the mood strikes to make a garment or quilt--even do an apholstery job. It sews a well ballanced stitch on both straight and zig-zag. The 2-step buttonhole looks pro. Superior to my $2,000 Pfaff in needle threader & thread cutter, and bobbin wind CAN be done while you sew. (of course the Pfaff is superior in other ways!) Re: thickness--sewed great if it started out on the 12 layers of cotton fabric and worked its way down to 2 layers. If starting on 2 and working its way up to 12, I could tell it was laboring some. If I were doing this as in an apholstering job, I'd do the small to thick increase, and then continue the seam after stopping so it gets a good flat surface on that thick part as it starts again. Due to the feed dog being able to drop, this little guy will be my quilter from now on and take the thickness load off my Pfaff. It will also make a good machine to take to sewing events. I bought it "used" but it still has a nice tight new machine sound. If you buy used, ask how long since it was cleaned. Look inside (where the bobbin goes and where the light bulb is)to see how dirty it is. Lots of fuzz = needs cleaning. Use a q-tip to pull the fuzz out before you oil it. The less you use a machine, the less the oil gets moving on the parts, so if it sounds clunky, try oiling it. I cannot speak about the instruction book as mine came as-is, no book. But with a little common sence I figured out its features. If it is your first machine, get a manual. Otherwise, threading is pictured on the face. To any one having trouble with a machine, basic rule #1: after you sew on the fabric, if there are loopies on the BOTTOM, re-thread the TOP. For jamming in the bobbin area, reinsert the bobbin case with bobbin in it...it MUST be in correctly. Try putting bobbin in again if the top thread just lays flat with only little pookies of bobbin thread holding it in place. If machine worked good last time you ran it, and now it suddenly isn't, consider "user error" and re-thread the whole thing. Hope this helps and happy sewing to everyone!!

Musical - 4½ Inch Antique Portable Sewing Machine 'Buttons & Bows' Review

I bought this for my wife who is an avid seamstress.It turned out to be a nice little item that is exactly as described here.It plays a nice tune, Buttons and Bows, and has a semi-operating sewing machine that turns along with the tune.I did notice that the workmanship left a little to be desired.There were some minor scratches on the sewing machine and some of the screws that retain the music maker were over tightened and left an indentation in the wood.Not enough to really detract from the overall impression, but noticeable.Overall I give it four stars - a nice item, almost heirloom quality but for workmanship issues.Interestingly, the provider would not ship the item until I let them know that it was a music box and not a working sewing machine!Whatever!I like it.My wife likes it.You will like it too.
